Dynamic Life
When I first saw the paintings of Jacob Lawrence, I was struck by the freshness of his style, a style described by Robert Hughes as “dynamic cubism”, and also by his choice of subjects, more often than not very fluid, open, social scenes; and these two factors, style and subject, combine to produce vibrant, invigorating images of people together, coexisting. I need to find a comprehensive guide to Lawrence’s work, as I’m becoming fascinated; but for now, here are three of his paintings:
